Sorry to all for non-stock related post but was curious what everyone uses for internet and what kind of speed you get. I recently moved my PC to basement with direct connection and I am getting horrible speed many times and PC lock where I cannot do anything. I use Spectrum / Time Warner and they have been out number of times. During the week I will get anywhere from 3 - 38 MBPS download and 2 - 6 upload. I did not have this problem upstairs and they assured me that is not an issue as it is direct connection. My wife uses wi-fi for her work without issue in another room. Could it be my PC or Spectrum does not know what they are talking about. I am switching to AT&T / Direct TV in a couple of weeks hoping to rid myself of this issue. I know Spectrum uses shared lines while AT&T uses single line to house which I am hoping is the issue. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am not PC savvy to figure out what could be the issue. Toshiba PC is 3 years old with an I3 Intel chip.
Thanks again for any input and again sorry for the non-stock question.

I have Verizon Fios -- 1 gigabit lightning fast internet As soon as Verizon came into my area laying down fiber optic lines, I made the switch I'm streaming quotes as I type so test came back slightly slower To trade, you honestly need to be hardwired into router. You can also install repeaters throughout the house to boost speeds And BTW - I have about 5 HD Quantum boxes, 2 boxes to record shows (DVR boxes and can record from any TV in house), Quantum Gateway router, repeater TV with all the channels pretty much, phone service, 1 gigabit internet Monthly bill not bad -- around $270 for all 3

Thanks for the info. Verizon unfortunately not in my area. Will disconnect tomorrow and move upstairs and run Wi-Fi to see how it functions. Even at 30 would be fine if it would only stay consistent. AT&T in two weeks so hopefully I could rule out PC and blame Spectrum tech group for not being able to figure out issue after THREE visits to my house.

It's likely got to be the wire you're using. If you're using the yellow wire, don't. If not, try another Ethernet wire, and make sure it's at least CAT5e.
Also make sure the wire isn't running along any power outlets or electrical wiring.

It's almost got to be the wire your using. Try another Ethernet wire, and make sure it's at least CAT5, and never use the yellow ones. They replaced the wire the one time they came out. I could barely type without interruption anymore. Not sure if it's the area of the basement I am in but they assured me that it made no difference where I was in the house since I was hard wired. I will try upstairs tomorrow or Wednesday to see what happens on wi-fi. Wife is in basement in other room on wi-fi with no issues...............uggghhh.............Thanks Huh for your input as well as Mist.............trying to narrow down possibilities as much as possible............. Have a good evening all !!!!

Also make sure the wire isn't running along any power outlets or electrical wiring. It is running against the back wall which I'm sure there is wiring back there not to mention it passes another outlet................how does that slow things down ? Again I'm not PC savvy so any help is greatly appreciated.............

Electrical lines can interfere with the internet cables, even the shielded ones.

Make sure the Ethernet cable is always at least 2 inches from power cables/outlets.

Also, how is the line attached to the walls/studs, if it is? Make sure it's not punched our squeezed too tight (zip ties tightened too tight can even create problems)

I can I figure out why my wife does not have problems on Wifi but I do on my direct connection. My children do not have issues as well on their laptop. It's getting pretty frustrating I would like to have it resolved before I switch to AT&T in two weeks or at least know what the problem is so I do not or they do not create the same issue

Wait a minute, you say "pc lock where you cannot do anything"? Why don't you plug another pc into that same cat5 cable and see how it does.

When I say lock I mean it slows to the point where nothing is happening for a few seconds............I will be taking the pc upstairs later on..............now as usual it is working fine and all windows are opening...................

Does the computer run fine sporadically? When it runs fine, is the Internet speed OK with the direct connection?

Sporadic probably best describes it.................My wife is not working from home so interested to see if her wi-fi usage has been messing with me.........should not be the case but I am open to anything at this point...............so far so good this morning..........
