10 things you need to know before the opening bell China's economic data misses across the board. Retail sales, industrial output, and urban fixed-asset-investment growth all fell short of estimates. Japan's GDP crushes estimates. The Japanese economy grew at a 1% quarter-over-quarter clip in the second quarter, easily beating the 0.6% growth that economists were anticipating. Traders haven't been this bearish on the dollar in years. Traders have a net short position of $7.4 billion, the highest since May 2014, according to the Australian bank ANZ, citing US Commodity Futures Trading Commission data released Friday. Morgan Stanley says the euro will be worth more than the pound. A Morgan Stanley team led by Hans W. Redeker believes the euro will top the pound for the first time in early 2018 amid increasing confidence in the eurozone and uncertainty surrounding Brexit. Bitcoin busts through $4,000 for the first time. The cryptocurrency trades at $4,215 a coin, up more than 17% from Friday's closing price. Tesla will raise more money than first thought. Because of strong demand for the Model 3, the electric-car maker will sell $1.8 billion worth of bonds, $300 million more than initially intended, IFR, a Thomson Reuters unit, reports. 'Angry Birds' is going public. Rovio, the creator of "Angry Birds," is looking to go public as early as next month at a $2 billion valuation, Bloomberg reports, citing sources. Dan Loeb ditches Snap. Dan Loeb's hedge fund, Third Point, ditched its shares of Snap while making investments in BlackRock and Alibaba, according to a 13F filing released Friday. Stock markets around the world are mostly higher. Hong Kong's Hang Seng (+1.38%) led in Asia, and Germany's DAX (+1.03%) is out front in Europe. The S&P 500 is set to open up 0.58% near 2,456. Earnings reporting is light. Premium Brands and Sysco are among the names reporting ahead of the opening bell. www.businessinsider.com/opening-bell-august-14-2017-2017-8

10 things in tech you need to know today 1. A female product designer at Google told Business Insider it was difficult for women at the company not to feel "attacked" after the memo written by fired engineer James Damore. She described most of the claims in the memo as "baseless". 2. Uber's board is planning to move forward with several investor proposals to buy shares. Dragoneer, existing investor Shervin Pishevar, and SoftBank have all offered to buy shares from existing investors, according to The New York Times. 3. Music streaming service SoundCloud will live to see another day after a reported $170 million funding round. The investment sees CEO Alex Ljung step down, and former Vimeo CEO Kerry Trainor take over the top job. 4. Twitter users banded together on Sunday to try and identify neo-Nazi protestors at Charlottesville. Most notably, the @yesyoureracist account published photos of protestors and asked for help with identification. 5. Bitcoin hit an all-time high over the weekend, breaking the $4,000 mark. It's only been a week since the cryptocurrency hit $3,000. 6. Facebook has been secretly testing a photo app in China called "Colorful Balloons", similar to its existing Moments app, which collates a user's photos from their phone. Facebook is banned in China, but has long been interested in reaching its users. 7. Amazon is thinking about using technology first developed by the US military to produce pre-prepared food that doesn't need refrigerating. The method involves putting the food in pressurized water, then putting it in the microwave. 8. A group of Uber shareholders want investor Benchmark Capital removed from the board, after it filed a lawsuit against former CEO Travis Kalanick over fraud allegations. The shareholders described Benchmark's actions as "ethically dubious". 9. James Damore, the fired Google engineer who penned a now-famous memo about diversity, has attempted to justify his position in a Reddit Q&A session. He complained that his boss at Google had created a platform to "publicly crucify" him. 10. Waymo, Google's self-driving car division, has been granted a patent which might make pedestrians safer in the event of a crash. The patent outlines a type of car shell which would "soften" before a crash. www.businessinsider.com/10-things-in-tech-you-need-to-know-today-august-14-2017-8

Futures up nicely this morning, and may not have even the seen the HOD yet. But I do expect at least a retest of Friday's close by EOD as futures were more than +7 before midnight last night. That's typically a move that gets retraced. (and this should make me not only the least popular person here today, but probably the idiot of the day as well)

Amazing how quickly that VIX curve straightened out. If it gets that low, watch for VXX support ~12.11 (pre-market low so far is 12.41)

When VXX screamed higher on Friday the question became does VXX drop back and backtest like it is today OR does it run higher and hit 100dsma Obviously, VXX ran higher and hit 100dsma and today its backtesting

If your recall the S&P chart I posted on Friday saying at some point S&P needs to backtest/tap the 10dsma well it looks like today is the day The one day selloff had no follow thru the next day, or today It was a good move to get out of Bear positions on Friday when at inflection point BTW - Friday S&P made a doji candle outside its lower BB and gapped up this morning S&P not sidestepping it back into BBs with selling today This bounce in S&P in short term can take S&P to UPPER BB and a retest of all time highs IMO

S&P should continue to rise vix futures with the overnight move improved drastically from backwardation to 7-8% contango I don't expect any hard selling today or tomorrow in the charts, so VXX should keep dropping IMO VXX 12.30ish should retest 12 and possibly back into mid 11.50 range in next few trading days IMO vix futures
